T-Mobile Decides to Open Up

I read that T-Mobile will reportedly open its application platform to software developers creating applications for its entire range of mobile phones. While obviously a reaction to Apple, which has encouraged software developers to create application for its phones via the App Store, I found the move another step towards open source within an industry known for its proprietary practices, let alone software/hardware development models.

Ala Verizon back in November, the announcement by T-Mobile is a perfect example of the kind of freedom that consumers are coming to expect, both in terms of the consumer space and from businesses as well. T-Mobile isn’t just acknowledging Apple, they’re acknowledging that consumers are demanding the freedom and agility to customize and shape their wireless devices, as opposed to being forced to meet the needs of the provider.
