Matt Aslett made an awesome post on the 451 Group’s CAOS Theory blog called “Open Source 2008 in Pictures” with some great graphs that explain some of his key points made in the blog all year.
I especially liked this one – showing that “open source” as just a concept is not a business model. The research came from a 451 Group survey of many open source vendors and how they create revenue:
As you can see, the largest area is Subscription services. I don’t know why SaaS is not included in subscriptions but either way – commercial open source providers see the writing on the wall.
And frankly, I was surprised that nearly a quarter of all respondents still consider commercial license models a viable strategy…
